I then clamp it in a vice and beat in those wavy curves. After it's fully formed I vigorously wire brush the forge scale off at 20,000 rpms and apply a beeswax and boiled linseed oil coating at ~500°F. A bandsaw, belt sander, cut off wheel, and good ole' fashion hammer and anvil get them into shape before they are wire brushed and coated in beeswax to protect from rust. Lastly a gemstone is fitting and the tines are cold forming around the gem for a good fit. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe stand that comes with is almost as much work as the scribes! It's made of 1\/8\" thick steel plate and 16 guage wire. That's why these hand forged nautilus shells are one of my favorite gifts to give friends, family, and other living fossils like my coworkers. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eProduction Process:\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eI start with a 5\/8\" thick bar stock of 1080 cold-rolled steel, get it to a cool 2000°F and wail on it with a big hammer until my arm gets tired or it's drawn out to a nice taper. I then get it back up to a temperature that hurts your eyes and twist it until my vice starts to groan to create that signature spiral pattern. After that I use a rawhide hammer to scroll the end in on itself and form the overall shell shape. The head and tail are tapered into recognizable forms and the body is bent into their signature snakey shape.
